What Is an Over/Under Bet?
An over/under bet (also called a totals bet) is a wager on the combined final score of both teams in a game. The sportsbook sets a total number, and you bet whether the actual combined score will be over or under that number.
For example, if an NBA game has a total of 224.5, you bet Over if you think both teams will combine for 225+ points, or Under if you expect 224 or fewer combined points.
Over/under bets are popular because you don't need to pick a winner. You're betting purely on the pace and scoring of the game.
How Over/Under Odds Work
A typical over/under listing:
Over 224.5 (−110) | Under 224.5 (−110)
The total (224.5) is the line set by the sportsbook. The odds (−110) are the price — identical on both sides in most cases. The half-point (.5) eliminates pushes.
If the game ends 115-112 (combined 227), the Over wins. If it ends 108-105 (combined 213), the Under wins.
Like spreads, the juice can shift. If heavy action comes in on the Over, the book might move the total from 224.5 to 226, or adjust the juice.
Factors That Affect Totals
Pace of play: Fast-paced teams push totals higher. Slow, defensive teams push them lower.
Weather: In outdoor sports (NFL, MLB), wind, rain, and cold temperatures typically favor the Under.
Injuries: Missing a key offensive player can significantly lower expected scoring. Missing a key defender can raise it.
Rest and schedule: Back-to-back games in the NBA often produce lower-scoring games due to fatigue.
Venue: Some stadiums are hitter-friendly (Coors Field in MLB), while others favor defense.
Over/Under Strategies
1. Follow the trends, but verify. Look at each team's recent scoring averages and Over/Under record. But always check whether the trend is driven by matchups that won't repeat.
2. First-half and quarter totals. Many sportsbooks offer totals for the first half or individual quarters/periods. These smaller markets sometimes have softer lines.
3. Live totals can offer value. If a game starts slowly, the live total drops. If you believe the scoring pace will increase (e.g., starters return after early rest), the live Under might be mispriced.
4. Watch for inflated totals in primetime games. Casual bettors tend to bet the Over in marquee matchups, pushing the total higher than it should be. Fading public Over bias can be profitable.
