Stanley Cup Playoffs 2026: Bracket, Schedule & Who We Think Wins It All

The pucks drop on the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 18, and for the first time in years, there's no clear consensus favorite. Eight teams from each conference have punched their tickets to the most grueling postseason in professional sports — a 16-win marathon where one bad bounce in overtime can send a Cup contender home early.

Here's everything you need to know heading into this year's playoffs — schedule, bracket, contenders, and our SportBusy picks.

Playoff Schedule: Key Dates

  • First Round begins: April 18, 2026
  • Second Round (Conference Semifinals): Early May
  • Conference Finals: Late May
  • Stanley Cup Finals: June 4, 2026

All series are best-of-7. Teams need 16 wins across four rounds to lift the Stanley Cup. That's why it's the hardest championship to win in North American sports — no 3-game series, no single-elimination upsets. Every team has to prove itself over a full month and a half of hockey.

The Format: How the NHL Playoffs Work

The NHL seeds its playoff teams in a divisional format: the top 3 teams from each of the four divisions qualify automatically, plus two wild-card teams per conference. In the first round, the division winners play the wild-card teams and the division's 2nd and 3rd seeds play each other — keeping geographic rivals together early in the bracket.

Both conferences (Eastern and Western) run their own bracket through the Conference Finals. The Eastern and Western Conference champions then meet in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Top Contenders: Who Has the Best Shot?

Eastern Conference

The East this year is deep and balanced, with no team running away with the conference during the regular season. Watch for the Florida Panthers — a battle-tested team that knows how to win in the playoffs — along with the Carolina Hurricanes, who finished among the league's best defensively. The Toronto Maple Leafs carry the enormous weight of a fanbase that hasn't seen a Cup since 1967, and this year's squad might be the best shot in decades.

The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers round out a formidable Eastern field where every series projects as competitive.

Western Conference

Out West, the Edmonton Oilers — who came within one game of winning the Cup in 2024 — return hungry and loaded, with Connor McDavid still the best player on the planet. The Colorado Avalanche have the depth to make a deep run, and the Vegas Golden Knights bring playoff experience and a home-ice advantage that opposing teams genuinely fear.

The Dallas Stars have been built for playoff hockey — physical, defensive, with clutch goaltending — and shouldn't be overlooked.

Our Stanley Cup Pick

We're going with the Edmonton Oilers. McDavid is playing at a level that feels historically great, and the team around him is deeper and more complete than when they made the Finals run in 2024. They have the goaltending, the top line, and the playoff pedigree. If they stay healthy, we believe this is their year.

Our dark horse: Carolina. Their defensive structure and goaltending depth make them dangerous against any opponent in a 7-game series.
